Do you relate to any of these?
👉The podcasts I’ve tried in the past have always gone over the same language
👉When I listen to other people learning, I find myself remembering their mistakes more than the correct phrases
👉If I tune out even for a second, I feel lost and defeated
👉When the speakers speak too quickly, I feel like I might as well be listening to white noise

My god is the team behind News in Slow … attempting a monopoly on all language learning podcasts? I’ve only just discovered that they’re even attempting to bore us out of learning Italian with News in Slow Italian 💀.
I’ve spent a long time compiling this list, as unlike with French and Spanish, it took me a long time to find interesting podcasts with accompanying (free!) transcripts. I went through lots of stuff that was recommended online, and found a lot to be desired. This is my criteria for a good podcast for levels A1-B1:
❌ No learners featured in the podcast
❌ No or very little English
❌ None of the same old “how to book a hotel room” dross
📄 Full free transcript
⬇️⬆️⬇️⬆️ Varied intonation
📚🗣️📜 Engaging content (fictional stories/personal accounts/informative pieces)
🧐 Cultural aspect
For effective language learning, instead of thinking that a podcast can “teach” you a language, it’s important to reframe this so that you commit to teaching yourself a language, using podcasts as a tool. Make sure to read my post on 5 free ways to become the ultimate active listener before you dive into these.
Now that you know the method, here are the podcasts I recommend most per level:
- All levels
- Beginner (A1)
- Pre-intermediate (A2)
- Intermediate (B1) – Upper-intermediate (B2)
- Final thoughts
All levels
Podcast Italiano
Average episode length: 10 minutes
This is an amazing resource that someone recommended to me on Twitter, create by a guy named Davide. Davide discusses everything from football to fascism at levels beginner, intermediate and advanced.
He also puts the episodes on his Podcast Italiano Youtube channel, with accompanying visuals of course, which will help your understanding.

Beginner (A1)

Pre-intermediate (A2)
Podcast 100% in Italiano
Average episode length: 15 minutes
Created by Manu Venditti, Podcast 100% in Italiano covers a whole range of topics and each episode comes with a set of pre-listen comprehension questions and the full transcript; Manu speaks nice and slowly so it’s a great resource for immediate learners.

Listen to Coffee Culture in Italy whilst reading the transcript. You can even catch Manu on his Italian Made Easy Youtube channel.
Intermediate (B1) – Upper-intermediate (B2)
La bottega di Babbel
Average episode length: 25 minutes
La bottega di Babbel is a really good resource; whilst it does feature students (one of my bugbears!), they all have at least intermediate level Italian and they are simply part of the conversation rather than a slow and plodding feature of the episodes.
Remember to read the dynamic transcript featuring pictures that accompany the episodes, as you listen.

Listen to the episode Italiane whilst reading the transcript.
Oggi nella storia
Average episode length: 5 minutes
Oggi nella Storia is a podcast centred around discovering what happened on this day in years past. As such, each episode is named after the date it was released, and the content features something that happened on the same day in the past. You can read through the transcripts as you listen.
These make great conversation starters with your friends, whether in Italian or your native language!

Learn Italian with Teacher Stefano

Creator Stefano is a pleasure to listen to, with his upbeat tone. He mostly covers topics related to Italian culture, whilst sometimes focusing on particular word sets in his episodes.

Stories
Average episode length: 7 minutes
Stories is a podcast with a twist; host and foreign correspondent Cecilia Sala reports from overseas to produced a story snippet of conflicts happening outside of Italy daily.
She says: “The idea is always to start with a scene, a detail or a character, famous or unknown, that is symbolic in some way and is an instrument to tell a larger, more universal story.”

Listen to Tutti gli indizi che gli ucraini lasciano in Russia whilst reading the autogenerated transcript here.
Final thoughts
A lot of great stuff has come out in the last couple of years; until recently, a lot of podcasts for Italian were gate-keeping their transcripts behind pay walls. Lucky for us, plenty of brilliant content creators have shared their transcripts for free!
