Brazilian humour is my second favourite kind of humour, after British humour, of course! I’d describe Brazilian humour as sarcastic, dry and occasionally on the dark side. I definitely need to add more sources to this list so please share anything you know and love! Here are three great comedic acts you should know about to get that informal Portuguese going.
Porta dos Fundos
Porta dos Fundos is a really successful comedy group and it’s hilarious. One of my favourite sketches is from about 10 years ago, featuring Clarice Falcão, who is also a very talented singer – I love her album called Monomania. She left the group after a few years and returned for their 10 year anniversary, with an updated version of Essa é pra vocês.
O Jeitinho Carioca
This was a short-lived venture with only a small number of videos on the “Carioca way”. If you’re reading this, you probably already know that a “Carioca” is a native of Rio de Janeiro, which, according to some, originates from the Tupi word “kari’ oka”, which means “white house”. This refers to the white houses that the Portuguese settlers built.
Paul Cabannes
Paul Cabannes is a French comedian who is married to a Brazilian and who lives in Brazil. His comedy is in Portuguese and it’s centred around his observations of Brazilian culture from the perspective of a foreigner. He’s got a Youtube channel, and you can also catch his hilarious shorts on Instagram.
Are there any other Brazilian comedians you know and love? What do you think of this lot? Comment below!
